Mana Tangata: People of Action

Book cover and carving

Overview

A publication identity anchored in mana tangata, with an original carved artwork and illustration by Dean Whiting as the central motif—expressing action, leadership, and service across Aotearoa and the Pacific.

Approach

We created the cover artwork, Te Amotai, and the lead illustration, developing a pattern language for the cover and launch collateral. Te Amotai uses mataī and tōtara timbers with mother‑of‑pearl and mussel shell inlay, and we directed reproduction to retain depth, grain, and wairua across print and digital.

Outcomes

A distinctive, culturally grounded cover and visual system that elevated the centenary launch and exhibition at the National Library of New Zealand, supported ongoing promotion, and connected readers to the kaupapa through authentic materials and narrative.
